Altura, Algarve is situated in the southeast corner of Portugal, 10 miles east of Tavira and 30 miles east of Faro airport. Altura is a purpose built resort with a planned layout of villas and holiday apartments. The majority of the resort consists of low buildings with a good range of bars, restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops.
The beach at Altura is long, wide with clean, fine sand with a range of water sports. There is a water park to the east of Altura. The local restaurants serve excellent fish, seafood and Portuguese cuisine. Car hire is recommended on an Altura holiday as it gives the opportunity to see other towns on the Algarve and the unspoilt countryside.
The village of Castro Marim sits 8km East of Altura and is entirely dominated by its huge castle strategically placed overlooking the Guadiana river. The battlements provided a ringside seat for gazing out over fens and the marshland of the Sapal Nature Reserve to the bridge over to Spain. The nature reserve harbours a rich diversity of fauna and flora flamingos. The construction of the new luxury golf and country club is making this area more popular to overseas visitors. From Castro Marim take the quiet back road that hugs the river for 14km and you pass by Foz de Odeleite, Álamo with its Roman dam, Guerreiros do Rio to Alcoutim. Set on the banks of the Guadiana, the small fortified town of Alcoutim with pretty cobbled streets enjoys truly breathtaking views of the Algarvian mountains and Spanish hills. Alcoutim’s mirror image across the river is the Spanish village of Sanlúcar. A small ferry will take you across the slow moving waters of the Guadiana to this hill top fortress. Whatever your pleasure, this relatively undiscovered and undisturbed area offers something for everyone |
